Einer meiner Druckbleistift-Favoriten ist der Pentel GraphGear 500, den es in zwei Varianten gibt. Der für den US-amerikanischen Markt (PG52x1) hat Schäfte in kräftigen Farben, doch der für Japan und Deutschland (PG51x) kommt in einem für mich wenig schönen Grau und einem anderen Drücker daher. So hat auch die nur in Japan erhältliche 0,4-mm-Version (PG514) diesen grauen Schaft, der zudem bei allen mir bekannten Exemplaren Schlieren aufweist. Gibt es eine Möglichkeit, zu einem attraktiveren Pentel GraphGear 500/0,4 zu kommen?

Ja, die gibt es! isu von the uncomfortable chair2, der mir schon bei Pilot S20/0,4mm geholfen hat, weiß einen Weg, für den man einen Pentel Graphgear 500/0,4 und einen Pentel GRAPHLET 0,4 mm (PG504) braucht.

Zunächst entfernt man die Spitze und das Griffstück des GRAPHLET…
… und anschließend den Ring, der über dem Griffstück sitzt. Leider lässt sich dieser nur mit Feile und Zange, also nicht zerstörungsfrei lösen, und es besteht die Gefahr, dass man dabei den Schaft unterhalb des Rings verkratzt. Das macht jedoch nichts, da dieser Teil später vom neuen Griffstück verdeckt wird.
Anschließend löst man das Vorderteil vom GraphGear 500 …
… und schraubt es auf den GRAPHLET. Fertig!3 – Der Korrektheit halber sei erwähnt, dass der Schaft des GRAPHLET weder richtig schwarz noch ganz frei von Schlieren ist. Beides fällt aber nur bei genauem Hinschauen auf, so dass er mir wesentlich besser gefällt als der graue des GraphGear 500.
Hier habe ich allerdings noch eine weitere kleine Änderung vorgenommen. Fällt jemandem auf, welche?

Anm.: Der Stoff im Hintergrund ist ein sogenanntes Tenugui, ein traditionelles japanisches Handtuch. Es stammt vom Yuruliku und zeigt eine stilisierte Schreibtischschale mit unterschiedlichen Füllungen.

Hast Du den Schriftzug entfernt oder den Clip nur gedreht (evtl. damit Du den Schriftzug nicht immer beim Schrieben siehst)?

Matthias: Danke! – Der Schriftzug ist noch da, aber ich habe den Stift für das Foto so gedreht, dass man ihn nicht sieht. Jetzt sitzt der Clip so, dass ich – wie Du richtig vermutest – den Schriftzug nicht sehe (man könnte ihn auch so anbringen, dass er den Schriftzug verdeckt).

Gunther,is there a reason you like the GraphGear 500 better than, say, the GraphGear 1000? I bought the 500 in 0.3mm but find it hard to love the muddy brown color :( I was wondering whether I should have bought the 1000 instead but that looked a bit too heavy and intimidating!

I had no idea that the Graphlet body is the same body of the GraphGear 500.
The click feedback and sound of the GraphGear 500 is the best from all my mechanical pencils, the Graphlet is the same?

I loved the Uncomfortable Chair’s Instagram, is like porn to me. How he made GraphGear 500 with 1.1mm or 2.0mm leadholder???
Sola: I haven’t used the GraphGear 1000 very long because I don’t like the rubber dots in the grip. It is a little heavy to me too, and I don’t need the retracting mechanism. – To me the GraphGear 500 is almost perfect: No play of the lead in the sleeve, no lead cushioning, a three-part metal clutch, a reliable feed mechanism, just the right knurling of the grip (not too soft and not too aggressive), the perfect diameter of the grip for my hands, a barrel which isn’t prone to scratches, a low centre of gravity, the right overall weight, a pleasing and unobtrusive design, a clip which is neither too soft nor too strong, won’t damage the shirt pocket and can be removed without scratching the barrel, no rattling of the cap, a low price and an easy availability. (Why only „almost perfect“? The lead could be advanced a little more per click.) – Most likely I would prefer the muddy brown over the streaky grey ;-)
Aluisio: Well, I actually haven’t changed the body but made the GRAPHLET look like the GraphGear 500 ;-) So far I can’t tell any differences between the mechanisms of the GraphGear 500/0.4 and the GRAPHLET 0.4; I assume they are identical. This would make sense in view of production costs, also the similar body. – I don’t plan to add a custom lettering (I even don’t know how to apply a non-abrasive one) but I will try to work on the barrel of the grey GraphGear 500/0.4; maybe sanding will make the streaks a little less visible. But before that I will try another mod of the black GraphGear 500/0.5 ;-)

No problem! I do also plan to make a electro deposition coating on my GraphGear 500 in black and the GraphGear 100 in matte black when I find a good place to make that.
Just checked the Uncomfortable Chair’s blog and is amazing! He even mentioned you in a post, but unfortunately I can’t read japanese and the translator don’t work. Bunch of crazy mods there!
I am eager to see the results of your coatings. I am sure the pencils will look great! – So far I have made two mods only, both with isu’s help. He is the master modder :-)
Yesterday I have tried the new mod on a GraphGear 500 and failed – I now have some more spare parts like the tip, the clip and the cap ;-)
Wer nur wegen der Kappe keinen PG52x opfern möchte, zerlegt die dreiteilige des PG51x und erhält so eine schlichte und funktionelle Kappe, die auch zur Sonderanfertigung passt:
